The UFC has informed Colby Covington that he will be given the first title shot against new welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, ESPN's Brett Okamoto reports.
Covington watched cageside as Usman dominated
and dethroned Tyron Woodley at UFC 235 on Saturday.
The two longtime rivals bickered for months about who was more deserving of a shot at Woodley. Covington won an interim welterweight title last June by defeating Rafael dos Anjos. Usman defeated dos Anjos in November to run his win streak to an impressive 13 fights, earning the matchup with Woodley.
Covington spent much of fight week disputing the booking and looking for an explanation from Dana White.
Woodley, the division's champion since 2016, will have to wait on the sidelines rather than earn an immediate rematch.
